Oh, what wonderful memories. All of it very positive! My son, Rob, was one of those single soldiers invited to dinner his first Thanksgiving stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He had dinner at the home of his Section SGT. Dinner was prepared by the wives of the two married SGTs in the section. The single soldiers brought things like the beverages. It was a happy Thanksgiving for him and warmed my heart knowing he was included in a family-like Thanksgiving. How wonderful of you to cook and feed all those soldiers.

I KNOW -- hard to believe, isn't it? I MAY have used one as a dustrag but that's about it. I knit about a half dozen for my kitchen, but didn't actually use any until recently. I have either knit them for gifts or swaps or whatever -- and my eldest daughter would come over and clean me out of nearly every cloth I had, so I didn't have much of an opportunity to use them. I have come to this late in life -- LOL

Oh my, I am so surprised to read that you are just now realizing in your own home the wonders of the hand-knit dishcloth/washcloth. I LOVE making them and using them. I have given away hundreds over the years. I like that they just go in the washer/dryer and back in use. When they are too worn to use, they go in the cabinet in the laundry room to be used as rags in the garage or for other messy jobs. I can knit more any time. I don't see why they couldn't be used as napkins, too. Here at my house, we have been using cloth napkins for years. I sewed a bunch of cloth placemats and coordinating napkins and that is all we use. I have a small stash of paper napkins for use when we are taking a packed lunch, but in the home it is reusable all the way. They just go in the wash with other things.

Hi,
I really enjoyed reading a couple of your posts that I found through doing a search for "nanny." I'm also from the Midwest but recently moved to North Carolina to be near my family. I enjoy gardening, cooking and books too, and I'm also a breast cancer survivor.

The nanny connection is that I will be starting as a nanny for my two-year old grandson on Monday, and I may post some blogs about my experiences.

Thanks,
Deb

My book group is reading Guernsey for our June selection. I have the book from the library and look forward to starting it soon, but won't be at the discussion. I am bummed about that. We will be in DC for the weekend for a Remembrance service at Arlington National Cemetary - annual event for Len's West Point class where they remember/honor their fallen comrades.

Mr. Bucket Head is TOTALLY adorable. The bucket on his head reminded me of my DS Rob. When he was a little guy, he would walk around wearing a green Tupperware lettuce crisper on his head and calling it his "firetruck hat". Sounds like you had a wonderful time with him there.

I am missing your regular blog updates and hoping things are well with you. Perhaps the weather has cooperated and you are doing more gardening and walking and less internet time. We picked our first two zucchini yesterday afternoon and I steamed them for dinner last night.

Oooooh, the sweater is gorgeous. Can't wait to see it finished. My sister does a lot of beading/jewelry making. Warning: It is very addictive. Her son says there are beads everywhere in the house since my sister and niece (14 yrs) are both avid beaders. Enjoy your time with Soldier Daughter.
